Role of Student Council

Due to an incident that just happened, I feel that I may need to clarify what your role as a representative of your class is.

First, here is a definition of what "to represent" means

To Represent: to act for or in behalf of (a constituency, state, etc.) by deputed right in exercising a voice in legislation or government:

This means that you are a *stand-in* for the rest of your class. You do not hold authority over your class, you do not make decisions for them, you are there to voice THEIR opinions, THEIR concerns, THEIR suggestions. If I could I would invite the entire class to student council- but that is not how it works. They picked you because they feel you are a responsible individual that will get their needs and wants across to student government and up onto the adults of the school where change can be made.

Please keep this in mind when you talk to your fellow classmates. Listen to them, take notes, remember what they say. You are their voice, not an authority over them.

Meeting Tomorrow, Pictures, New Office

Hiya!

Have some GREAT news... but first, business!

There will be a meeting tomorrow (Sunday April 20th) at 12:30pmSLT. This meeting is MANDATORY for all government members and recommended for student council members.

During this meeting we will have a little meet and greet, discuss what we'd like to do as student government, and take some pictures! Yes, pictures. I (Alexa) would like to take pictures of all the government and student council members and make a collage to post with everyones name and titles. If you cannot make the meeting drop me a notecard on when is a better time for you. I will be in the office most of the day tomorrow :) If Sunday is not good for you at all- no worries! We can always do it Monday during school or something, just give me some notice!

Also, some AWESOME NEWS!

Jill has made us our OWN office in HKE. They have made it where the boys bathroom used to be (near Miss Ava's class). We will be sharing this with the yearbook and journalism clubs as well. We will put up some notecard receivers so students can make comments or complaints or suggestions and we'll post the pictures in there.

See most of you tomorrow!

Student Council Elections

Here is a little overview on how student council elections will be held and what the roles entail. Voting will be on Monday, April 14th. 3H voting will be held Tuesday, April 15th.

Process

Student Council elections will be held Monday during class time. 3H elections will be held on Tuesday, but run in the same manner.

At the beginning of class kids will discuss with one another and let the teacher know if they want to be on student council and represent their class- not everyone has to run if they do not want to. After about 5 minutes of discussion the teacher will tell the class those that want to run. The kids will then write down on a notecard that is handed out to them the two kids that are running that they want to represent their class.

ALL kids must vote and if the ones running for student council do not vote they will not make it. You MUST vote to win. President, Vice President, and Treasurer must also vote. People who ran for office and did not win may run for student council.

Teachers will then box ALL of the notecards (or put them in a folder) and send them to Alexandra Daikon, who will tally them during school and then walk to all the classrooms and let them know who won.

TWO representatives of EACH class will be chosen. They will be invited into the group once the winners are announced, and given a time card on when they are available for a meeting.

If you are in two classes (such as morning and 3H) you may vote in each class- however- if you win student council in one class you MAY NOT run for student council in your other class. If you run for student council in one class and do not win, you are welcome to run again. Any kids that run and win for student council in one class and run again in their second (and win that one) will not be counted and the other 2 with the most votes will win. You may, however, bring in ideas and such for BOTH classes. This is to ensure that 2 *different* kids from each class are chosen.

**For Morning Class**
I will not be online until 11am SLT... at that time I will tally all the votes and make sure that they are done before school is out at 11:30am so you don't have to wait until Wednesday.

Roles of Student Council

Student council is being set up to aid student government. They will be able to bring up specific topics that need changing in each of their classes as well as giving more insight to things that the kids want changed in their school. They will be able to take some of the load off the student government since there are more of them that the students can talk to. They will also help organize different fundraisers or events, such as dances etc.

If you decide to run for student council make sure you are ready to really be a part of the school and help. This is not a popularity contest- this is for kids that really want things changed in their school.

This will also be posted on our blog: http://hkescsg.blogspot.com/

--Good luck kids!--

--HKESCSG

And the winners are....

Treasurer: Danni Ohara

Vice President: Ava Parker

President: Nicole McCallen

Congrats kids! See you all in a meeting soon!

Elections Next Week!

Hello all you HKESCSG Blog readers!

Here's a little picture I took last night at the debate. I am very proud of all of you- you did wonderful jobs! Good luck!

Just a reminder, there will be elections next week. We have not decided yet how they will run but here are the three options.

1. I will find a website that allows you to type in your SL name for tracking purposes and then lets you vote ONCE. This will ensure that there is no cheating, since online polls are filled with bugs. You will be able to vote from Monday to Wednesday.

2. Miss Jill will provide a script for us that we will put in an object that will allow each student to vote once for a candidate in each category. If SL would start working I'd talk to her more about this... but at the moment SL is being stupid so that will have to wait. With this you will also have Monday-Wednesday to vote.

3. We will do manual elections. I will go around to each classroom on Monday and hand out ballots to each student in the class and they will hand them back to me. I will come around on Wednesday as well just in case people were absent on Monday.

For any of these 3 options, Miss Jill will announce the winners on Wednesday at the end of school.

Next Friday will be student council elections. I will write another post about that later this week as well as send notecards out explaining everything.

Good luck all!

Meeting Highlights

This is what I wanted to say at the meeting that many of you did not show for.

1. I wanted to discuss cheating again and make sure you all understand, reread the post on cheating and IM Alexandra Daikon with any questions.

2. Once the student government is determined- all meetings will be MANDATORY for those in Pres/VP/Treasurer. We will discuss at the end of each meeting to see when next week's meeting should be. This will not be flexible for those holding positions, however, student council it will be more flexible. I want to make sure that those 3 people can make it at whatever time we can- and hopefully the majority of student council will be able to show. IF something unexpected comes up- please try to IM or email me (alexandra.daikon@gmail.com) with this info at least 6 hours prior. Obviously if it's an emergency don't sweat about it. RL COMES FIRST!
(hypothetical example: the meeting this week is monday at 2pm we will ask at the end of the meeting if this is a good time next week or should we change it.)

3. Since so many have helpers already working on campaigns you won't be kicked out for it, so don't worry about that. It's okay for parents and friends to help, but make sure most of the work is done by YOU NOT THEM!

4. Do NOT promise people you will change things that are a tad outragous- ie having recess all day or you will destroy the lag- it's not possible to do. You can promise them things like dances etc because we will work hard to get things like that together.

5. Election process: I haven't decided yet. I'm scared to do an online pole for the cheating reason (people voting more than once etc) so I may try and find a website that makes you type in your name to vote but doesn't give specifically what you did vote for, just that you voted OR I may go back to the manual method and go into each class- hand out the ballots myself and have them turn it into me and I will count them. I'll do research and try and get this info out ASAP. If any of you know of websites like that please tell me.

6. If you DO NOT win elections- don't worry- you can still try and run for student council (which will be a representative of 2 students per classroom). These elections will be held next Friday (4/11).

I think that was all. Please send me a notecard if you have any questions. Good luck this week :)

Mandatory Meeting Scheduling

Hello all nominees!

We need to have a meeting sometime this week for a Q&A/going over rules.

I'd like to pick a day and time where EVERYONE can show. So sometime around 2/2:30pmSLT either Weds, Thurs, Fri, Sat or Sun. Please let me (Alexandra Daikon) what day(s) you are available and if 2/2:30pm is good for you. If the time is a major conflict let me know and we'll work something out.

If you are available ALL of those days at that time say that.

See you soon!

Campaign Preperation

Starting today, ending March 31st, is Campaign Preparation week for all HKESCSG nominees.

This means that they will be given one week to create and place any posters, support booths, or whatever else they feel they need to spread their message to gain YOUR vote.

While campaign preparation week is going on Candidates are not allowed to directly campaign to specific students, i.e. IMing people or answering any questions yet BUT they are welcome to place whatever they need to in the school. The one catch being that each candidate ONLY has 15 prims to do so.

On a Final note all nominees will be added to the group "HKE Student Council Student Gov't" so if you're running but somehow missed out on the invite IM Miss Alexandra Daikon OR Graziano Vendetta to get added.

So, let the games begin!

Hi. I'm running for Vice President of the Student Council. My name is Ava Parker.

I have a great time here at HKE.

If you elect me, I will work to be a voice for all in our student government.

I think we should make sure there are plenty of groups available to HKE students that aren't about winning or being the smartest kid around, but that everyone who particiaptes comes away from feeling enriched.

And I think we need to support diversity at HKE - all the different kinds of students with different kinds of interests - and how they can express their personalities as part of this school - maybe even reconsidering how we approach school uniforms.

If you elect me, I'll work to be your representative. These are some issues I think we should discuss. If you got things you think the Student Council should consider, I will be your advocate for bringing those issues to the table, because if you elect me, I will serve you.

Elections Pushed Back Due To Spring Break

So, as you all know spring break for HKE is next week. What does this mean for elections? Well here ya go :P

1. Nomination box is still closing on Friday even though there is no school, so if you want to run and haven't nominated yourself yet you have until then.

2. Elections will be pushed back a week so the polls and such will be up the first week back after Spring Break. Those running can use the week off to prepare for their campaign (making posters etc.)

3. There will be a meeting for those running during Spring Break so we can get organized and what not for election week. This date will be announced on Friday after we talk to all the nominees and pick a day and time we can all meet at.

That's all the news for now! Will keep this updated when we figure more things out.

A Note On Cheating

To all HKE Nominees: President, VP, and Treasurer.

MUST READ!

The school election campaign process will begin on Monday the 24th and elections will begin on Monday the 31st.

Because of how we are running the polls and the campaign process (i.e. students can simply IM you with questions) there is one very important issue that needs to be discussed: cheating.

During the campaign process and the voting period (Monday 31st - Wed 2nd) we expect ALL candidates to act with honesty and integrity. During the campaign period, if a student IMs to ask you questions we expect them to be handled properly. Do not threaten, bribe, or guilt students into voting with you. Win on your merit, not how guilty you made somebody feel or how many shiny objects you are capable of giving them. Students found threatening, bribing, guilt tripping, or acting in otherwise negative behavior (you know what we mean) will be disqualified and stopped from running for any position again.

You are more than welcome to make posters, and post them around the school etc, but behave in a way becoming of a HKESCSG member.

Once campaign week is over (Friday 28th) there will be a 2 day calm down period over the weekend, and the following Monday 31st polls will be posted on the blogs. The only people allowed to vote in these polls are HKE Students. This means do NOT ask family members or friends outside of school to vote for you and do NOT use multiple IPs to vote for yourself repeatedly. The numbers of votes will be watched and any irregularities will be noted. IF you are found cheating in any way shape or form you will be disqualified from this election race and banned from all future elections.

This is an election for OUR school representatives and as such we expect them to behave in a way which truly represents the HKE Spirit: with honor and integrity.
